THE EVOLUTION OF FACIAL EXPRESSIONS

This project researches the visualization of facial expressions throughout the ages, from century-old experiments to animated emoticons. Since ancient culture man has been looking for scientific fundamentals to categorize and determine human facial expressions. The way emotions and facial expressions are represented in printed and radiated media has changed past decades.

Facial expression – the inner emotion expressed on the outside of the human – has always been of great interest to mankind. Philosophers, neurologists and artists made an attempt to understand the mechanism of facial expressions and its underlining emotions.

This project is an ode to a new facial expression evolved in the digital age; The Duckface, a facial state of being celebrated and spit on (short time after) by the world we call the internet.

Inspired by F.X. Messerschimdts Charakterköpfen, I used myself as a template to created two head sculptures. The first one represents a supernormal, blank human expression accepted and acknowledged in the physical world. The second one represents an accepted and acknowledged facial expression in the virtual world.

The Duckface captures the spirit of the ’00-’10 years. Loneliness and desperation for attention are the crucial ingredients that constructed this facial expression. People rely on others’ perceptions, judgments and appraisals to develop their social self in the virtual world. A world discovered and build by the last 20th century generation. The Duckface captures all these thoughts, doubts and decisions. It represents our most vulnerable and insecure emotional expression till today.
