INVISIBLE MANIFESTATIONS OF A WIRELESS WORLD

Wireless devices have become intimately entangled with our daily lives, but what do we know about their workings? What kind of magic happens beneath the shiny surface of a mobile phone? How does data manifests itself in space? ‬

The electromagnetic radiation these devices use to transmit and receive our data is invisible. Although we can communicate through this invisible medium we do not have direct access or an awareness of its contours and boundaries. Our human perception fails to recognize this part of the electromagnetic spectrum.

INVISIBLE MANIFESTATIONS OF A WIRELESS WORLD tells the story of one data particle, The Yellow One. This little creature could be your facebookupdate, a .gif of Nicolas Cage riding a wrecking ball or a bitcoin happily transferring between bank accounts. The Yellow One encounters a variety of situations during his ride on the virtual highway. He arises, travels, delivers and dies. He enters, exits, penetrates, exploits, splits and multiplies.

Is it possible to relate to an immaterial, invisible but actual entity? If so, how do we relate? Should we be concerned about it’s penetrating behavior? Our seemingly odd beliefs and associations surrounding electromagnetism shows that an inability of understanding can lead to strange but interesting imaginative fixations. ‪The narratives people develop to explain and relate to electronic objects are far more satisfying and understandable than the abstract scientific explanations. I translated the outcome of my research into a visual story that combines the factual with the imagined, revealing a special and intimate insight of the workings of the wireless devices we use every day.‬
